In 2009 and 2016 I spent time in, Xinjiang Autonomous Region, in China's far west, photographing daily life in Kashgar and along the Karakorum Highway, one of the most beautiful drives in the world. Many of the places in these photos, especially those in Kashgar (known as Kashi in Mandarin) no longer exist.
